Pumpkin in Strasbourg

When we were in Strasbourg, I found a green grocery near the Hilton Hotel which we stayed. While Zsolt was speaking in the conference, I made a mini-sightseeing by myself, wondering on the french streets that was covered in brown golden and yellow leaves.

It's the autumn in Strasbourg.

I can't express how beautiful the weather was for us. It was cool enough with some sunshine. So with just a light coat is enough, even with just light stocking and a mini skirt, is the attire you can wear for the entire afternoon in the outdoors.

Here in Hungary, the pumpkin can be found quite readily nearing the end of Autumn. So food likes pumpkin soup, pumpkin cakes, pumpkin pies, you name it, there are many different creative ways the hungarians cook this harvested fruit too!

Halloween is around the corner, you may wanna check out a recipe for making the creamy double layered pumpkin pie :) here

The Myth About The Turul: Emese’s Dream

In the legends Turul is mentioned at least twice to shape the fate of the Hungarians: the first time Emese, mother of Álmos, wife of Ügyek (whose ancestor is Attila the Hun) had a dream where a Turul appeared, impregnated her symbolically and a crystal-clear water stream started to flow from her, and as it moved Westward, it grew into a great river, which meant that her child was going to be the father of a line of great rulers. The second time, the leader of the Hungarian tribes had a dream where eagles attacked their horses and a Turul came and saved them, to symbolise that they have to move, and when they did, the Turul helped them to show the way and led them finally to the land that became Hungary.

This legend is about Hun-Magyar kinship, and the base of the theory that Magyars reconquered Hungary as their rightful inheritance from Attila’s great Hun Empire.

Based upon ancient Hungarian tradition, the royal house of Hun(garian)s (the kings of Huns and the later Hungarians) bears the name of Turul clan (original Latin: genere Turul, later called by the name Arpad house also), what descents from the wise and just king Nimrod, the first king on Earth.

The Turul represents the god’s power and will. The Turul was seen as the ancestor of Attila, and it was also the symbol of the Huns. The Hungarian Turul is often represented carrying the flaming Sword of God (sword of Attila).

This is such a coincidence as it happens so that my wife is named Jodee. Well, we found the name 'Jody Coyote' has a certain ring to it, just like 'Jodee'. The most common query from people about her name is 'Judy' 'Judit' in Hungarian.

With compliments from Jody Coyote jewelry, here are some useful and practical 'Care Tips'

Polish the wire parts using a jeweler's rouge cloth or silver cleaning cloth. The embossed metal components have been treated with a protective coating, however and will not need cleaning. Avoid using cleaning solutions as these may damage the jewelry and remove protective coatings that are applied to many designs. Exposure to air is what causes silver to tarnish, so store in an airtight container or closed box.

Karate Kid

I have watched the new Karate Kid yesterday in the movies and I sort of like it. Not because of the basic story, which is a replica of the classic Karate Kid movie from the 80s. There were some details in this movie that made me like the film.

The way they presented China, and the Chinese culture. Okay, it was still full of boring icons, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the entire kung-fu thingy. These parts where americanized just like Jackie Chan who is repairing his car in his own living room.

I rather like tiny details. For instance, there were a lot of non-English conversations. Especially about the moment when the little boy is the only one who wears uniform, or not he is the best in basketball. In this movie, the Chinese people weren’t shown as incompetent, expendable monkeys that speak in a non-educated manner with their strong accent. In this movie, if someone who had an accent is the American boy who tried hard to communicate in Chinese.

The movie was a cooperation between Hollywood and a Chinese company. And predict the future when Americans (and the others) are moving to China because this is the place where the jobs will be. I like better to see China like this instead of the strange little yellow commies that are killed in every 5 seconds by the American superhero. Time to recognise the human in each other and to respect the other cultures. Good start with the Karate Kid.

1956

The Hungarian revolution in 1956 taught me something very important. I was born in 1972. 16 years after the events. So I didn't see 1956 with my own eyes. I didnt experienced it.

First I heard about 1956 at the school. In my history-book in the early '80s they refered to it as a counter-revolution. I did believe. Why?....Because they said so! Because they wrote so in the schoolbooks.

Where are our knowledges come from? How do you know that the Earth is a globe and its not flat? How do you know that Australia exists?
You heard about it. You read about it in books or in scientifical studies. You saw it on the TV. And do you believe that the Earth is a globe and its not flat? Yes most probably you do. Even if you are not an astronaut who saw it with his/her own eyes. Or you never made mathematical calculations or physical experiments to get convienced. You just simply believed what they taught to you.

80% of our knowledges are like this. We simply believe what they say to us.
In 1989 I was 17. The communist block collapsed and suddenly all the newspapers, books, TV channels started to say it was a revolution in 1956. We received new history books..but the content was different. I saw the same newspapers but they wrote totally the opposite as before. They were using the words just like before but their meaning was the opposite. I watched the TV where smart men were talking about revolution with a superserious face. The same faces as before when the previous guys were talking about the counter-revolution.
I think this was the point when I decided I won't believe anything just because they say to me with very serious face. What happened in 1956? I dont know. They say it was a revolution but I haven't been there. Is the Earth a globe or it is flat? I don't know. They say it is a globe but I never seen it from a distance. Does Australia exists? I don't know...they say it exists and maybe it does but I never been there.

This is the story..how skepticism became on of the foundation of my way of thinking. The Greek phylosophy of skepticism says:
- every knowledge is limited and even with the tool of logic we cant be sure we got the final truth because even the premises of logical consequences are mostly based on prepositions. (source: wikipedia)

To me the most important they said was the truth was not unavailable but the truth is something which doesn't exist in a clean simple form.
Maybe I am wicked saying this things on this wonderful day when I can see all the TV channels around the word are celebrating the great revolution of Hungary decades years ago. And I can see the serious faces on the TV, I can hear the pathetic words but I am like being poisoned somehow. Maybe I am too old even at 34 that I have an inner resistance in myself a little devil sitting on my shoulder saying:

- what if they rewrite the books again?"

Driving or Riding

I have been living in the downtown for a couple of months. In the very downtown. It is pretty crowded and everything is within 5-10 mins distance so I do not really use my car anymore. I ride the tram I take the metro or I walk. Totally different feeling. I can hear people talking around me, the tramway is like a meeting point with a lot of impressions. I sort of got used to it and I enjoy to be among people.

But today I had a meeting in the suburb of Budapest. I decided to go by car and it was a strange very good feeling. It was raining a bit, sort of cold. The usual wet Autumn with falling leaves. But within the car I turned on the air condition it was pretty warm I was sitting (usually on the tram I have to stand) and I was listening to the radio. To drive in a city has a mood. Traffic jam is annoying but otherwise its very fast and smooth way of travelling. To be honest I enjoyed it a lot.
The disadvantage of using a car is that it is a lonely scene. I am closed into my box. The tram or metro is more social, at times I even communicate with the people but definitelly not as comfy as driving. Which do you prefer in your city? Driving a car or taking a tram?

Learn to Approach

Scott Gilson (an Australian) runs his business Learn To Approach that helps guys of all ages to be more successful when it comes to date and approaching women. We asked him about his work:

1. Based on your experience in helping guys to approach women, which kind of guys are the most challenging to coach? Why are they challenging?

The most challenging guys that I work with are the ones who will give you every reason why they cannot be successful with women. The story I normally get is “I am too short, too tall, not good looking enough, not rich enough, don’t have the right zip code, don’t have the right car…” and the list goes on. They have told this to themselves for many years and the sad thing is they now believe it. When they come to me they will actually try to sell me on the reasons why they can’t ever be successful with women. The great thing about these guys is when we overcome these so called problems and realize that these “problems” are not what’s holding them back; they have great success with women.

2. Which is your most prided success story in your coaching?

I worked with a gentleman who was 41 years old and had never had a girlfriend in his life. This gentleman called me and told me his situation; to be honest I knew I had a big challenge on my hands. The age thing was no problem at all. We work with guys of any age I am currently working with a guy who is 67 that wants to date younger women. The challenge I had was that every time he tried to speak to a woman his whole body would tense up and he would start to sweat and basically freeze. My other challenge was that if he spoke to a woman and she didn’t respond like he thought she should, he would not try again for six months. The crazy thing was, this guy was very successful in other areas of his life. To cut a long story short, after we worked closely together for a few months I bumped into him 18 months later. He introduced me to his beautiful 32 year old girl friend and told me to expect a wedding invite in the mail shortly. I have always said I have never met a guy I can’t help!

3. What are the differences or changes a guy would expect after 'learning to approach'?

The difference in the guys after we have finished working with them is amazing. The one massive change I see is the level of confidence in the guy. Another great thing about what they have learnt in their time with us is that they incorporate what they’ve learnt into different areas of their life. I have worked with a lot of guys and it never surprises me when I see them again and they tell me how after working with us their business or careers have improved. They now have a much better social circle or the depression or loneliness they used to experience has now disappeared. When we coach our clients we don’t just give them some pre-written pick up lines and send them on their way; we get to know our clients on a personal level. That personalization is the big difference with ‘Learn To Approach’.

4. What are the problems guys essentially face nowadays in their approach, that don’t work?

The main problem these days is most guys just want pick up lines. They want to be able to walk up to a woman with a perfect pick up line and have her respond in a positive way. The big problem with pick up lines is that most don’t work. We don’t teach our clients pick up lines, we teach our clients how to start conversations. If a guy comes to me and says give me a good pick up line I instantly think “this guy wants a quick fix he doesn't want to learn a skill”. Another problem with pick up lines is that if she does respond in a positive way, not many guys know what to do next; they have a great start but two minutes later there is the dreaded silence.

5. What advice would you give to a geek or nerd to approach a woman he wants to date?

Ask yourself the question “What kind of guy would I need to be in order to attract a woman”. After you have answered that question then ask yourself “How can I become that guy”, then go out and do whatever it takes to become that guy. I don’t care what you look like or how much of a geek or nerd you are, the only thing holding you back from not having the success with women you want is ‘you’. I have worked with many geeks and nerds over the years; something that may surprise most is that some of these guys become fantastic with women in a very short time.

Alien? or lights on TGV trains

To be honest, the TGV is quite comfortable to our standards. The leg room as compared to the airplane is so much wider. The seats are larger and more comfortable than the economy class. Even a 2nd Class TGV seat provides more flexibility and movement than traveling on the plane.

In the photo, is the lights for your reading pleasure. It has a touch sensitive button which you cannot even feel any toggle when you press it to switch the lights on. The train itself is well-lit, so it is not like the compulsory lights off when you travel on a plane at night. The storage space for your luggage is ample. You can bring your own sandwiches and most travelers brought themselves some drinks and I can see the trend was eating apples ;)

How I overcome math

In my primary school days, I had never enjoy the Math subject. I do not know why, but I simply cannot pay attention during the lessons. Some people called it 'attention deficit' :) I don't considered it as a disorder just simply because I can't count. Particularly the multiplication tables, it was such a pain to memorize it.

Our teacher was really strict. In the morning when we arrived at the classroom, all of us must stand in attention. First we sang the national anthem, then we greeted our teacher. However, our teacher told us that we must not sit unless we could answer her 'mental sums' - a session which she would randomly say out a mathematical problem.

   Teacher: ''12 times 9''
   Student A: ''108''
   Teacher:''You may be seated''

So like this, she would go around the class, at the same time checking on the school uniforms, height of the socks, length of our skirts, nails, shoes, etc.

Those days, one would really hope there are things like Math help or Algebra help. Somehow or rather, mathematics teacher are the strictest teachers in the school. It is worse when she became your form teacher whom she is the tutor and she will closely monitor your progress and update your parents about your behaviour etc during the parent-teacher meet every quarterly.

At school, I am usually getting help for homework from the more diligent classmates. Who would think that nowadays, Homework help is here. Some other children are rich enough to get a private tutor to help them directly, one on one, for their homework. I remembered working on the  Math problems or even Fraction became easier after I passed my PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examinations). Somehow I was a 'black horse' that year, as they put it, I made 20% progress and was given two books and a cash voucher as a form of reward.

That day onwards, I figured math is not the worse subjects after all. I began to excel for being very hardworking at practicing 20+ assessment books. Then in the tertiary school, I could do the additional math problems like a breeze. If you ask me, I think you might want to try Calculus help. To me personally, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! is what keeps me going and I get better and better as I completed more practices.

Strike in Strasbourg, France

Somehow we seemed to see the strikes whenever we travel to other parts of Europe. The last trip to Madrid, Spain, we also met the demonstration by the spanish about the agriculture policy.

Now that we were in Strasbourg, France, we witnessed this strike which at the point of participation, we didn't even know what was it about?! :D

Funnily, we just joined in the fun cos it was indeed fun to see so many people marching in the streets. They were rather calm and peaceable than violent.

Suddenly they started to dance for those ladies in the front row with the long big banners. Everything was in french of course, so we didn't even know until coming back home, reading the news that it was a protest over the pension reform.

CGT labour union implied that the cost-cutting axe is coming down too harsh on workers. These strikes has taken place for the fifth time since May, and up to 1 million people joined the protest marches against the Sarkozy's government. Mainly workers from public transportation, railways and oil refineries.

Unions have said fuel shortages may occur within a few days while government officials said there is fuel for one month.

Éclairs

Almost everyday when we were in Strasbourg, we picked the Éclairs amongst the wide varieties of desserts to try.

Well, to be honest, I didn't find Éclairs to be so tempting before even in those days when I was in Singapore. Even in Budapest, it was through Daphnee who introduced this interesting french pastry of choux dough filled with a cream, topped with icing.

The shape is easily recognizable as it has this long thin pastry like an oblong. It tastes the same as those used for profiterole or something like the cream puff.

The hollow inside is naturally formed during baking and it is filled with coffee or chocolate-flavoured pastry cream (crème pâtissière), custard or whipped cream, and topped with fondant icing.

We saw the other fillings include pistachio- and rum-flavoured custard, fruit-flavoured fillings, or chestnut purée. mmmm....i really want to try the chestnut purée.

Do you have any idea why is it called 'Éclair'? I heard there is no relation to 'lightning' which is the meaning of it in French :)

Oriental Area Rugs

If you like rugs that are cheap, you can easily find cheap rugs everywhere else. The ones I saw at Judy's place are rather oriental area rugs. Perhaps she likes to decorate her home that is somehow Tuscan Italian style. The colours and comfort brought about by rugs cannot be more emphasized. She also like to have lots of greens and table lamps. These elements do make these area rugs to be really warm and it is ideal for winter time :) You just don't want to walk around the house as any kind of floorings are definitely too cold to walk on in cold Budapest winter.

A lot of italian or spanish homes are well decorated with architectural ornamentation or plaster effects. Living in Hungary, I have observed that it is more for facades and exteriors of building that are decorated with those plaster effects. Some architectural ornamentation are even with relations and meanings of the profession of the occupants. These we are referring to older buildings that are dating from the renaissance period. It is rather the crafts and touches that makes the interior of the hungarian homes warm. A typical hungarian home are decorated with laces that has a certain history and traditional lace making background story. There are also folklore crafts that are mostly the blue and white printed materials, making aprons, dresses for children and many other useful items for the home use.

Wood floor installations or better to say, the parquet flooring are most commonly found in Budapest. So definitely most people would at least go for cheap or discount area rugs if not the expensive and grand ones. In itself, Budapest has this old world charm.

Toxic sludge in Hungary has reached the Danube

Toxic red sludge that leaked from a reservoir in Hungary reached the Danube, Europe's second largest river, on Thursday as emergency officials worked to contain as much of the leak as possible.

I don't think that this disgusting toxix thingy will reach Budapest or it will cause any damage here but I feel very pity for those villagers that has suffered a lot from this disaster.

The environmental disaster has killed two children, ages 1 and 3, an elderly woman and a 35-year-old man whose SUV overturned in the sludge.

About 250 people have been evacuated from their homes, said Gyorgi Tottos, a spokeswoman for Hungary's Catastrophe Protection Unit.

HOME Birth Midwife Arrested in Hungary

Welcome to the World little Pineapple!

Hungary’s senior home birth midwife, Ágnes Geréb, was arrested yesterday and taken into custody. She has attended the births of over 2000 babies at home, and her mortality rate is well below those of hospitals. Her court trial has been fraught with “irregularities” with key parts of testimony mysteriously disappearing.
